Programs We Offer
The Pavilion at Williamsburg Place is here for anyone dealing with psychiatric symptoms or a mental health crisis in Williamsburg, VA, and the surrounding communities.
The Pavilion assists people of all ages who need help with behavioral health and substance use problems. Our work begins while the client is under our care, whether as a resident in our facility or in our outpatient clinic. Following our carefully assessed and individualized treatment program, we work closely with the client’s local care providers to ensure that treatment continues after discharge.
Treatment Modalities
In addition to group and individual therapy, we offer a number of treatment modalities. recovery.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a fundamental evidence-based treatment, can be a very helpful tool in treating mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety disorder, and severe mental illness. The goal of CBT is to change patterns of thinking or behavior which lie behind a person’s illness, and so ultimately change how they feel internally.
Recreational Therapy
Various forms of recreation can be used to help older adult patients. Exercise and games can promote positive emotional states and improved cognitive functions. Other activities, such as our karaoke sessions, allow patients to relax and enjoy themselves.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based psychotherapy designed toprovide clients with new skills to manage painful emotions and decrease conflict in relationships. It has also been used to treat mood disorders as well as those who need to change patterns of behavior that are not helpful, such as self-harm, suicidal ideation, and substance use disorders.
Temporary Detention Orders (TDO)
The majority of patients are admitted to Pavilion’s Acute Care Program under a temporary detention order (TDO) issued by a local community magistrate via a community services board. A person who decides to submit to treatment voluntarily would enter our mood disorder program.
Taking away a person’s freedom and committing them to psychiatric treatment against their will is an extreme measure that it is only undertaken when all other treatment options have failed or been deemed unsuitable. A TDO is issued when a person has a mental illness and it has been determined that the person is likely to cause harm to himself/herself or to others in the near future, or that the mental illness impairs the person’s capacity to protect himself/herself from harm or to provide for his/her basic needs. Involuntary psychiatric treatment is a last resort and is only used for patients who are a danger to themselves or others.
For the relevant laws governing the issuance of a TDO, please see Virginia Code § 37.2-808 and § 37.2-809.
In Virginia, a TDO allows a person to be hospitalized for 1–3 days. During that time, a hearing must be held to determine whether continued treatment is warranted. At Pavilion, hearings are held each Monday at 2:00 pm, Wednesday at 11:30 am, and Friday at 11:30 am. Following the hearing, the patient may be released, remain under care until the next hearing, or be moved to another care program, such as The Pavilion Mood Disorder Program.
