Overview | Acute Care

The Acute Care Program at The Pavilion provides an intensive level of compassionate psychiatric care for individuals who are considered an immediate danger to themselves or others, or are experiencing severe dysfunction due to a psychiatric condition. Our treatment program is patient centered and designed to assist each patient in regaining control of their behaviors through participation in group therapy, therapeutic activities, and psychopharmacology. Whenever possible, family members and significant others are involved in treatment to ensure a safe return to the family unit and the community. The family is also included in establishing the outpatient psychiatric services needed for ongoing treatment. The treatment center is a 24-bed unit with semi-private rooms.

Whom We Treat

The Acute Care Program is designed for immediate stabilization of acute psychiatric conditions such as:

  • Schizophrenia
  • Major depressive disorder
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Panic/anxiety disorders
  • Other psychiatric conditions

Many patients are admitted under a temporary detention order that has been issued by a magistrate at the request of a Virginia community services board designee.

Our Program

The Acute Care Program provides a comprehensive assessment by an interdisciplinary team of psychiatric professionals. This assessment is used to develop an individualized treatment plan to manage acute symptoms. A licensed clinician monitors the patient’s progress and ensures that the patient receives a customized plan of treatment for their mental illness in order to stabilize their condition quickly. Nursing care and monitoring are provided at all times, and nurses check on the patient at least once every fifteen minutes. A typical stay in the program lasts 5–7 days.

In addition to psychopharmaceutical treatment, we provide experiential and group therapy. Various other modalities, including exercise and expressive therapy, are also employed. Patients receive a nutritional consultation and education about medication management, and we assist with discharge and aftercare planning. Our recovery-based approach places emphasis on avoiding future readmissions.
